Description General Sherman leaving the Twentieth Corps, withdrew the rest of his army from before Atlanta and the rebels began to rejoice over his supposed retreat, when he suddenly reappeared to their astonished vision fifteen miles south from Atlanta, attacked the Rebels at Jonesboro, capturing their works, ten guns and 2000 prisoners, and inflicting upon them a loss of three thousand killed and wounded, the Rebel Genl. Hood being competely "Hoodwinked" in the words of Genl. Sherman, "blew up his magazines at Atlanta, and left in the night time, when the twentieth Corps Genl. Slocum took possession of that place," - adding the proudest trophy of all, to the Conquering arms of our Noble Army of the West.;
