Description On November 25, 1842, Commander Alexander Slidell Mackenzie overheard rumors of a mutiny on board the Somers. Midshipman Philip Spencer (son of Secretary of War John Canfield Spencer), Boatswain's Mate Samuel Cromwell, and Seaman Elijah H. Small were found guilty by Mackenzie and hung at the yard arm on December 1, 1842. This was a highly controversial decision. For more information, refer to The Somers Mutiny by Judith A.
