Description Winter Garden – a conservatory of art, devoted to the production of tragedy and comedy in the most perfect form, and especially to the culture of an American drama, is now open, under the management of Mr. W. Stuart. Stage manager, Mr. J. G. Hanley. This establishment has, during the past two months, undergone a complete renovation and repair, under the direction of Messrs. Gambril and Post, architects, of this city. The house has been repainted, and the exterior lobby and interior circles have been newly decorated by Mr. J. H. Mohr, and the proscenium beautified by pictures illustrative of scenes in the plays of Shakespeare. The first eight weeks are devoted to comedy, and Mr. Stuart has pleasure in announcing that Mr. J. S. Clarke will appear nightly in a variety of his humorous characters, in favorite old plays and many new ones. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Robert Stoepel, will perform the overture to “Le Chalet” by A. Adam, “Tarantella” by E. House, selections from “Trovatore” by Verdi and “Newport Lancers” by H. Fry. To conclude with Mr. Clarke’s new and amended version of the far-famed comic drama of “Toodles”, as performed by him in New York for 102 nights. In preparation, Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors”, in which Mr. Clarke will appear as Dromio of Syracuse. No chairs or stools will be permitted in the alley ways, such a practice being deemed inconsistent with the comfort of the audiences and their perfect freedom of ingress and egress.
